All of the people I talk to hate the fact that you have to walk through a wall of smoke anytime you want to enter a building. Then the smell of smoke is on your clothes for the rest of the day. They all think that the campus should limit or even elliminate smoke on campus.
I have also talked to multiple people about this subject and many have mixed feelings on the subject. I think it is evident that smoking is a public liability because of the medical research that has proven second hand smoke is extremely dangerous. That is why 223 universities have went to a free campus and why many states have banned smoking in public places. The only real resolution to this problem is to ban smoking on the campus just as states have banned it in public places. Afterall the university is a public place and FUNDED BY THE STATE GOVERNMENT!!
I used to smoke, and I personally would not have cared if the campus was smoke-free or not. I would normally smoke on the way to or from class. Since quitting smoking, I understand how bad cigarette smoke smells. It would also be nice to walk through campus and see cigarette butts on the ground.
I've talked to numerous students who have all agreed that turning Wichita State University into a smoke free campus is the best decision for everyone. One of my former roommates is allergic to cigarette smoke and she says that walking into any heavy traffic building is murder to her lungs. In addition all of the cigarette butts on campus make our University unappealing to new students and if our job is retention we would need to work on image.
